TULIP COMFORT EXPERIENCE

What is the Tulip Comfort Experience with Penthrox?

It is an optional comfort experience offered to patients who prefer additional support during certain gynecologic procedures such as IUD insertion/removal/replacement or endometrial biopsies. It includes Penthrox pain management along with non-medical comfort measures to help you feel more at ease.

Is my procedure still covered by OHIP?

Yes. Your medical assessment and procedures are covered by OHIP. You are never required to pay to receive medical care.

What does the Tulip Comfort Experience include?

  • Penthrox (methoxyflurane) pain management along with extra time/support necessary

    • Penthrox is an inhaler that contains a drug called methoxyflurane, which is poured into the device. A piece of gauze inside soaks up the liquid and you inhale the vapours. These vapours are what provide the pain relief.  It is self-administered, self titrated, rapid-acting, non-narcotic inhalational agent that is a low-risk, highly acceptable option for pain management of in-office gynecological procedures.

  • Calming environment (gentle aromatherapy ambiance)

  • Heating pad used during the visit

  • Comfort supports (pillows/blankets as needed)

  • Drink and a light snack (as appropriate)

  • Personalized aftercare card and review

How much does it cost?

  • $200

  • Not covered by OHIP

  • Some private insurance plans may reimburse part of the cost

Do I have to choose this option?

No. This experience is completely optional. Declining it does not affect:

  • Your care

  • Your appointment

  • The quality of medical treatment you receive

Is Penthrox the only way to manage discomfort?

No. Many patients choose to proceed without it and take NSAID/Tylenol prior to coming. Your clinician will discuss what to expect and support you regardless of your choice.

Why isn’t this covered by OHIP?

OHIP covers medically necessary services. Optional comfort experiences and certain pain-management options are not publicly funded.

Will my care be rushed or different if I don’t choose it?

No. All patients receive the same standard of medical care, whether or not they choose any optional services.
